Beginning farmers and ranchers throughout the US are struggling with drought, floods, dramatic climate changes, pests, diseases, and the hundreds of other natural pressures they face on a regular basis. Yet, the one foe they tackle with the greatest trepidation is the “business of managing their business” sustainably.  

New farms need to have a well designed business plan that takes into consideration individual infrastructure and financial needs, the viability of marketing strategies, and the farmer’s production capacity and knowledge.

Business Planning may seem daunting, but there are resources out there to help you:

  • In Mendocino County, on e of our partners is a non-profit called the West Company.  If you are a Mendocino County resident, you can apply online through the Northern California SBDC Network to receive free workshops & consulting services.  Check out their website at www.westcompany.org.
  • In Sonoma County, the Economic Development Board is focused on making small businesses a success--check out the many services they offer at http://sonomaedb.org/Business-Assistance/.
